Alpha Lipoic Acid for Sciatica: What We Know and Do Not
Alpha lipoic acid for sciatica has no trial of its own in the sources we use. The studies are in diabetic nerve pain, where oral 600 mg a day was studied for 5 weeks and the intravenous form looked stronger. SciatiEase holds 250 mg of R-ALA per serving. Treat any sciatica link as an educated guess.

The evidence01
Does alpha lipoic acid help sciatica?
Nobody has shown it for sciatica. The data come from diabetic nerve pain.
A pooled analysis of trials in diabetic neuropathy found a clear effect with intravenous 600 mg for 3 weeks. The authors said it is unclear whether oral doses matter clinically (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012).
Sciatica is different. It is usually a pressed nerve root, often from a disc (MedlinePlus, Sciatica). Evidence from damaged nerves in diabetes may not carry over.
Oral doses02
What oral dose of alpha lipoic acid has been studied?
Oral 600 mg a day, for about 5 weeks.
600 mg a day worked as well as 1,200 or 1,800 mg for neuropathy symptoms over 5 weeks. A 4-year trial of 600 mg missed its main goal (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
| Route | Studied dose | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Intravenous | 600 mg, 3 weeks | Clear symptom drop (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012) |
| Oral | 600 to 1,800 mg, 5 weeks | Similar across doses (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) |
| Oral, 4 years | 600 mg | Missed main goal (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) |
The label03
How much alpha lipoic acid is in SciatiEase?
250 mg of R-ALA per 4-capsule serving, inside the AlphaPalm Blend.
The brand home page says 300 mg. The panel prints 250, and we follow the panel (SciatiEase order page). Either way it is below 600 mg, and it is R-form only. See R-ALA vs ALA.
Alpha lipoic acid may lower blood sugar, so diabetes medicine users should ask a clinician first (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid). It is also linked to a rare insulin autoimmune syndrome (Vallianou et al., Metabol Open 2026).

Should you take alpha lipoic acid for sciatica?
Only as an informed experiment, with your clinician's knowledge.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Never stop it for a supplement. Check alpha lipoic acid and blood sugar before you start.
FAQ05
Alpha lipoic acid and sciatica
Is alpha lipoic acid good for a pinched nerve?
We found no trial in pinched-nerve sciatica. Evidence is in diabetic neuropathy (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012).
How long to try alpha lipoic acid?
Oral trials ran about 5 weeks (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid). Judge your symptoms at day 30.
What side effects does alpha lipoic acid have?
Rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and vertigo were reported (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
Why does the intravenous form look stronger?
Pooled trials found the biggest drop with 600 mg given intravenously (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012). Capsules are not the same thing.
Is 250 mg of R-ALA too low?
It is below the 600 mg studied, though that was a racemic mix (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid). No trial tested 250 mg of R-ALA.
