Feverfew Side Effects: Who Should Skip It and Why

Quick answer

Feverfew side effects are mostly mild: nausea, stomach upset, bloating and rash. Rarer problems are mouth sores from chewing leaves, a withdrawal syndrome after long use and allergy in people sensitive to ragweed. SciatiEase holds at most 50 mg of feverfew extract per serving, and nobody should take it during pregnancy.

The list01

What are the side effects of feverfew?

Stomach trouble is the most common: nausea, digestive upset and bloating (NCCIH, Feverfew).

Rash can also occur. Chewing the fresh leaves can cause mouth ulcers, which does not apply to a capsule (MSKCC, Feverfew).

Withdrawal syndromeAfter long-term use, when stopped

The dose02

How much feverfew is in SciatiEase?

At most 50 mg per 4-capsule serving, and the label does not say how much.

Feverfew leads a 50 mg "Proprietary Blend" with passionflower, Chinese skullcap and oat straw. Blends may hide single amounts (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Because ingredients are listed from most to least, feverfew is at most 50 mg, and an even split would give 12.5 mg.

That is small, but the reference sources do not give a safe dose, so a small amount is not proof of safety. The migraine evidence is mixed (NCCIH, Feverfew), and we found no feverfew trial for sciatica.

Who should skip it03

Who should not take feverfew?

Pregnant women, anyone allergic to ragweed or daisy-family plants, and people on blood thinners need a clinician first.

Blood thinners

Feverfew slows platelet activity and may add to bleeding risk. Read feverfew and blood thinners before combining.

Stopping04

What happens if you stop feverfew suddenly?

Some long-term users report a withdrawal syndrome (MSKCC, Feverfew).

The sources do not describe it in detail or say how common it is. Keep taking prescribed medicine regardless, and ask your pharmacist about this supplement. The SciatiEase side effects guide covers the other lines.

FAQ05

Feverfew safety: specific questions

Does feverfew cause stomach upset?

It can. Nausea, digestive problems and bloating are the most reported effects (NCCIH, Feverfew). Taking capsules with a meal is a common way to lessen it.

Can feverfew cause mouth sores?

Chewing fresh leaves can cause mouth ulcers (NCCIH, Feverfew). A swallowed capsule does not touch the mouth lining the same way, so this matters little for SciatiEase.

Is feverfew safe in pregnancy?

No. Both reference sources advise against taking it during pregnancy (NCCIH, Feverfew). SciatiEase is for adults, and pregnant or nursing women should ask a clinician first.

Does feverfew interact with ragweed allergy?

It can trigger a reaction in people sensitive to ragweed and related plants, including chrysanthemums and marigolds (NCCIH, Feverfew) (MSKCC, Feverfew). If you react to daisy-family plants, skip it.

How long before surgery should feverfew be stopped?

At least 2 weeks, because it may slow blood clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew). Tell your surgeon about every supplement you take.
