What Does Maximum Strength Mean on Supplements?

Quick answer

On a supplement, maximum strength is a marketing phrase. We found no legal dose standard for it in our sources, so it does not tell you the amount is the highest studied or the highest safe. SciatiEase prints the words on its bottle, and its panel shows PEA near trial doses but ALCAR and benfotiamine below them.

The words01

What does maximum strength mean on a supplement bottle?

Nothing we can measure. The panel is the only place the strength is stated.

The phrase is printed on the front of the SciatiEase bottle. We found no rule in our sources that sets a dose for it, so another brand's maximum strength could be higher or lower.

The FTC says evidence must match the product's dose and formulation (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). So test the word against the numbers.

The fair test

Strength is only meaningful next to a studied dose and a safety limit.

Test it02

How does SciatiEase's strength compare with studied doses?

Mixed. One line sits inside the studied range and others sit under it.

PEA sits at 500 mg per 4 capsules, inside the trial range. The other lines are lower or unclear.

Benfotiamine200 mg300 or 600 mg a day(Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008)

Vitamin B620 mgAustralia warns above 10 mg a day(TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy)

Not always better03

Does a higher dose mean a stronger supplement?

Not by itself. Oral alpha-lipoic acid at 600 mg a day matched 1,200 and 1,800 mg over 5 weeks (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).

Some lines have a ceiling too. B6 is the example: a higher dose raises the nerve risk the TGA describes, with symptoms reported below 50 mg a day (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy). The brand order page suggests 8 capsules a day if nothing changes in 14 days (SciatiEase order page). We never suggest more than 4.

Low ALCAR and benfotiamine lines are a fair criticism. The ALCAR review found little difference from placebo at 1,500 mg or less (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019).

Your move04

What should you look at instead of the words?

Check three things before the front label.

  • The serving size.
  • Each printed amount against a trial dose.
  • Any amounts the label hides, as in a proprietary blend.

Our SciatiEase maximum strength post covers this bottle in detail, and the Supplement Facts page reads the whole panel.

FAQ05

Maximum strength: questions about the words

Is maximum strength regulated on supplements?

We found no dose rule for the phrase in our sources. FDA does not approve supplements (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements), so the words are a company's own choice.

Is maximum strength safer or riskier than regular strength?

The phrase alone says neither. Safety depends on each amount and your medicines, so ask your pharmacist.

Does maximum strength mean the highest dose from studies?

Not necessarily. On SciatiEase, ALCAR at 250 mg is far below the 1,500 to 3,000 mg used in studies (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019).

Can I double the dose to get maximum strength?

No. Never go past the serving on the label. For SciatiEase that is 4 capsules a day, since 8 would double the B6 to 40 mg.

Why do the render and the bottle show different claim lines?

The brand's computer renders print “Sciatic Nerve Formula” while the bottle photo prints a support claim, so packaging may vary.
