Nerve Pain Supplements Ingredients: The Common Ones and Their Doses
Nerve pain supplements ingredients usually fall into three groups: B vitamins, antioxidants and amino-acid compounds such as lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine, and fatty-acid amides such as PEA. Trial doses run from 300 to 1,200 mg for PEA and 1,500 to 3,000 mg for carnitine. A formula is only as good as its printed amounts.

The usual suspects01
Which ingredients are in nerve pain supplements?
Four families show up again and again.
B vitamins are needed for normal nerve function. Their value for pain is unproven (Ang et al., Cochrane 2008). Lipoic acid, carnitine and benfotiamine come from diabetic neuropathy research. PEA comes from chronic pain trials (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023).
| Ingredient | Dose in studies |
|---|---|
| PEA | 300-1,200 mg a day (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023) |
| Alpha-lipoic acid | Oral 600 mg a day, mixed R and S form (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) |
| Acetyl-L-carnitine | 1,500-3,000 mg a day (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019) |
| Benfotiamine | 300 or 600 mg a day (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008) |
| Vitamin B12 | RDA 2.4 mcg; 1,000 mcg oral is about 1.3% absorbed (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12) |
Forms02
Why do the forms of nerve vitamins matter?
Active forms skip a conversion step, but the trials mostly used the plain ones.
Folate may be listed as 5-MTHF, B6 as P5P and B12 as methylcobalamin. They are active forms (NIH ODS, Folate). Whether they beat the cheaper forms for nerve pain has not been tested head to head in the studies we cite.
Only the R form of lipoic acid is made by the body, yet all human studies reviewed used the mixed R and S form (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
Blends03
How do you spot a weak nerve pain ingredient list?
Look for hidden amounts and token doses.
A proprietary blend may list ingredients without single amounts, which US rules allow (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). In SciatiEase the four herbs share a 50 mg blend, so each holds at most 50 mg and likely far less. Compare that with PEA at 500 mg.
- Is every amount printed?
- Is the dose near the studied range?
- Is the B6 total within reason? SciatiEase has 20 mg (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy).

FAQ05
Reading nerve pain ingredients: questions
What is the most common ingredient in nerve pain supplements?
B vitamins, usually B1, B6 and B12, are the most common because they are cheap and tied to nerve function. The evidence for relieving pain is insufficient (Ang et al., Cochrane 2008).
What does PEA do in a nerve pain supplement?
PEA is a fatty-acid amide the body makes. Across 11 trials it lowered pain scores in chronic pain at 300 to 1,200 mg a day (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023). Its role in sciatica rests on one trial (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015).
Why is acetyl-L-carnitine added to nerve formulas?
It was tested in diabetic neuropathy, where pain dropped 9.16 mm on a 100 mm scale in very low certainty evidence (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019). Gains were small at 1,500 mg or less.
Do herbal extracts in nerve supplements add pain relief?
Not that trials show. Feverfew has been studied for migraine (NCCIH, Feverfew), and oat straw for mood and memory (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020). Their roles in nerve pain are unproven.
How do I tell if a nerve supplement is underdosed?
Compare each printed amount with the studied range, such as PEA at 300 to 1,200 mg (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023). Any ingredient with no printed amount cannot be checked, so treat it as unknown.
