Oat Straw Extract Benefits: What One Trial Did Show
Oat straw extract benefits are thinly documented. The best trial we found gave healthy adults a green oat extract and saw better working memory and multitasking, with no change in mood. It did not study pain or nerves. SciatiEase holds at most 12.5 mg of oat straw per serving, far below the trial doses.

Evidence01
What are the benefits of oat straw extract?
One trial found better working memory. Nothing we found shows a nerve or pain benefit.
The trial gave 132 healthy adults aged 35 to 65 a green oat extract at 430, 860 or 1,290 mg, or placebo, for 29 days. A single 1,290 mg dose and 4 weeks of 430 or 1,290 mg improved working memory and multitasking scores. Mood did not change (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020).
We found no NCCIH or Memorial Sloan Kettering page on oat straw, so this trial is the best source available.
The trial did not measure pain, nerves or sleep. Applying it to sciatica would be a guess.
The dose gap02
How much oat straw is in SciatiEase?
At most 12.5 mg per 4 capsules, because oat straw is last in a 50 mg blend.
Four herbs share 50 mg, listed most to least, so the fourth holds at most 50 divided by 4 (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The label does not print the real figure, and an even split gives the same 12.5 mg.
| Amount | Milligrams |
|---|---|
| SciatiEase, most it can hold | 12.5 mg |
| Lowest trial dose | 430 mg |
| Gap | about 34 times |
The trial used a specific extract, so the two are not even the same product.
Fair view03
Is oat straw worth having in a nerve formula?
It does no harm on the evidence we have, and it does little that we can show.
In its favor
- A placebo-controlled trial with a positive memory signal (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020)
- Listed by name on the label
Against
- No pain or nerve study
- Amount hidden, tiny at most

Where does oat straw sit among the other herbs?
It shares the blend with feverfew, passionflower and skullcap, and it is the least studied for safety.

FAQ05
Oat straw extract: short answers
Is oat straw the same as oatmeal?
No. Oatmeal is the milled grain, while oat straw is the plant's stem and leaf. The trial we cite used a green oat extract, which may differ from the label's extract (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020).
Does oat straw help with nerve pain?
We found no study showing that. The one trial we cite measured memory and multitasking, not pain (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020).
Is oat straw safe?
We found no safety warning in the sources used here, but there is also no large safety record. The trial ran 29 days in healthy adults (Kennedy et al., Nutrients 2020).
Can I take oat straw if I avoid gluten?
The SciatiEase panel makes no gluten-free claim that we could read. If you have celiac disease, ask the seller or your clinician before ordering.
How much oat straw does SciatiEase contain?
The amount is not printed. It is at most 12.5 mg per 4 capsules, since it is fourth in a 50 mg blend (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
