Benfotiamine vs Thiamine: Which Form Is in SciatiEase?

Quick answer

Benfotiamine vs thiamine comes down to form. Thiamine is vitamin B1; benfotiamine is a synthetic derivative that the body converts into thiamin. SciatiEase uses benfotiamine, 200 mg per serving, which is more than 160 times the 1.2 mg adult RDA for men. No trial compares the two forms for sciatica.

The difference01

What is the difference between benfotiamine and thiamine?

Thiamine is the vitamin itself. Benfotiamine is a lab-made version that the body turns into thiamin.

The NIH fact sheet calls benfotiamine a synthetic thiamin derivative converted to thiamin in the body (NIH ODS, Thiamin). The adult RDA for thiamin is 1.2 mg for men and 1.1 mg for women, and no upper limit has been set (NIH ODS, Thiamin).

Food and ordinary multivitamins supply thiamin. Benfotiamine shows up in nerve products at far higher amounts.

Numbers02

How big is 200 mg of benfotiamine next to the RDA?

It is about 167 times the men's RDA and 182 times the women's.

The math is simple: 200 divided by 1.2 is about 167, and 200 divided by 1.1 is about 182. A standard thiamin supplement carries a milligram or a few.

Thiamin and benfotiamine amounts
ItemAmount
Adult RDA, men (NIH ODS, Thiamin)1.2 mg
Adult RDA, women (NIH ODS, Thiamin)1.1 mg
Neuropathy studies, benfotiamine (NIH ODS, Thiamin)120 to 900 mg
SciatiEase, 4 capsules200 mg

Evidence03

Which form has the nerve evidence?

Benfotiamine, in small diabetic neuropathy studies.

Three small studies at 120 to 900 mg lowered symptom severity compared with placebo (NIH ODS, Thiamin). The BENDIP trial's result was borderline (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008).

We found no head-to-head test of benfotiamine against plain thiamine, and none in sciatica. A claim that one form is clearly better would go beyond the data.

A fair reading

Benfotiamine has the studies. Whether it beats thiamine is untested.

Choosing04

Should you worry about too much thiamine?

No upper limit exists, so the larger worry is paying for amounts that may do little.

Furosemide, a loop diuretic, is linked to lower thiamin levels (NIH ODS, Thiamin). If you take it, tell your clinician. Keep taking prescribed medicine.

FAQ05

Thiamine forms: specific questions

Is benfotiamine better absorbed than thiamine?

We found no source in our set that measures this, so we will not claim it. What we can cite is that the body converts benfotiamine to thiamin (NIH ODS, Thiamin).

How much thiamine do adults need?

The RDA is 1.2 mg for men and 1.1 mg for women, with no upper limit set (NIH ODS, Thiamin). SciatiEase's benfotiamine amount is far above that, since it targets a different purpose than basic needs.

Can I take benfotiamine and a B-complex together?

Many people do, but add up your B vitamins first, especially B6. SciatiEase already has 20 mg of B6 per serving, above Australia's 10 mg warning line (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy).

Do water pills lower thiamine?

Furosemide, a loop diuretic, is linked to lower thiamin levels (NIH ODS, Thiamin). Ask your clinician whether your diuretic matters here.

Is thiamine enough for nerve pain?

Not on current evidence. A Cochrane review found vitamin B evidence insufficient for neuropathy (Ang et al., Cochrane 2008). A deficiency should be fixed, but ordinary doses are not shown to ease sciatica.
