Diabetic Neuropathy Supplement: What the Evidence Covers

Quick answer

A diabetic neuropathy supplement is a capsule, usually alpha-lipoic acid, benfotiamine, acetyl-L-carnitine or B vitamins, taken for burning or numb feet. Small trials show mixed, modest results at doses often above what one SciatiEase serving holds. SciatiEase has not been tested in people with diabetes, so treat it as a question for your doctor.

The basics01

What is a diabetic neuropathy supplement?

It is a capsule sold for the burning, tingling or numbness that high blood sugar can cause in the feet.

Up to half of people with diabetes develop peripheral neuropathy, most often in the feet and legs (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). The mainstay is steady control of blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol, with prescription pain relievers when needed.

Supplements sit beside that care, never in place of it. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and never stop or change it because of a capsule.

The trials02

Which diabetic neuropathy supplements have been tested?

Four ingredients have small trials behind them, and none gives a firm answer.

The best-studied are alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), benfotiamine, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) and B vitamins. Trial doses often top what one SciatiEase serving holds.

SciatiEase03

Is SciatiEase a diabetic neuropathy supplement?

No. It is sold for sciatic nerve support, and no trial tested it in people with diabetes.

The panel shares ingredients with these studies, at lower amounts and in a different mix. Single-ingredient studies may not support claims for a combination (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). For the wider picture, see peripheral neuropathy supplements.

Two cautions if you have diabetes

ALA may lower blood sugar, so people on insulin or diabetes drugs should monitor glucose (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid). Metformin can lower B12 (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12).

Before you buy04

What should you ask your doctor first?

Ask whether any capsule fits your glucose plan, since both the nerves and the medicines matter.

Bring the SciatiEase label or any product you consider. Ask if ALA could shift your readings and how much B6 your products add up to. One serving here holds 20 mg.

FAQ05

Diabetic nerve pain and supplements: quick questions

Can diabetic neuropathy be reversed with a supplement?

No supplement has been shown to reverse it. Prescription pain relievers do not reverse nerve damage either (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). Steady blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol keep it from getting worse.

Does intravenous alpha-lipoic acid work better than capsules?

In pooled trials, 600 mg by IV for 3 weeks gave a clearly relevant drop in neuropathic pain. The authors were unsure oral doses did (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012).

Why do some diabetic neuropathy supplements contain benfotiamine?

Small studies of 120 to 900 mg a day eased symptoms against placebo (NIH ODS, Thiamin), though the best-known trial just missed its main target (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008).

Does metformin affect nerve supplements?

It can lower vitamin B12, and low B12 can itself cause nerve symptoms (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). Ask for a blood test before adding a high-dose B12 capsule.

Should I check my feet if I take a nerve supplement?

Yes, every day. Numbness hides small cuts and sores, and no capsule changes that (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
