Peripheral Neuropathy Supplements: What Has Been Studied

Quick answer

Peripheral neuropathy supplements are capsules sold for tingling, burning or numbness in the hands and feet. Alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, benfotiamine and B vitamins have small trials, and the results are mixed. Two of them can also cause harm in the wrong setting. No trial tested SciatiEase itself, and its herbs have no neuropathy data.

The condition01

What does a peripheral neuropathy supplement aim to do?

It aims to support nerves outside the brain and spine, the ones that carry feeling from your hands and feet.

Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness, pain and weakness, usually in the feet and legs (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). Causes vary: diabetes, chemotherapy, alcohol, low vitamins and more. A supplement cannot tell which cause you have, so a diagnosis comes first.

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Never stop or change it because of a supplement.

Evidence02

Which peripheral neuropathy supplements have trial data?

Four have some data. None has strong data, and the numbers come mostly from diabetic neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy supplements and what the evidence says
SupplementEvidenceWatch for
Alpha-lipoic acidIV 600 mg helped; oral unclear (Mijnhout et al., Int J Endocrinol 2012)Low blood sugar, rash, nausea (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid)
Acetyl-L-carnitineVery low certainty, 907 people (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019)Worse neuropathy at 3,000 mg during chemotherapy (Hershman et al., J Clin Oncol 2013)
BenfotiamineBorderline at 300 or 600 mg (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008)Well tolerated in the trial (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008)
B vitaminsInsufficient to judge (Ang et al., Cochrane 2008)High B6 can cause neuropathy (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy)

Most of those trials enrolled people with diabetic neuropathy, so results may not carry over to other causes. Our diabetic neuropathy post goes further.

Risks03

Can a neuropathy supplement make nerves worse?

Yes, in two known cases: too much vitamin B6, and high-dose acetyl-L-carnitine during taxane chemotherapy.

Australia's regulator received over 30 reports of suspected neuropathy linked to B6 products and now requires a warning above 10 mg a day. Symptoms were reported below 50 mg a day, especially with several products (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy). One SciatiEase serving holds 20 mg, so count B6 from every product you take.

Chemotherapy

In a 409-woman trial, 3,000 mg a day of ALCAR worsened taxane neuropathy (Hershman et al., J Clin Oncol 2013). One serving here holds 250 mg, but tell your oncology team about every supplement.

Choosing04

How do you judge a neuropathy supplement label?

Check each amount against the dose studied, then look for hidden amounts and extra B6.

  • Are the amounts printed, or hidden inside a blend? SciatiEase prints 8 of 12 amounts.
  • Does the dose match a trial? Compare it on the ingredients page.
  • Is there a trial of the product itself? For SciatiEase, no.

FAQ05

Peripheral neuropathy supplements: your questions

What vitamin deficiency causes peripheral neuropathy?

Low B12 is a well-known one, and metformin or acid reducers can lower it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). A blood test tells you, so ask before self-treating.

Can too many B vitamins damage nerves?

Too much B6 can, and symptoms were reported below 50 mg a day (TGA, Vitamin B6 and neuropathy). Add up B6 across every supplement and multivitamin you take.

Are peripheral neuropathy supplements covered by FDA approval?

No. FDA cannot approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before sale, and firms can often sell without notifying it (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).

Does any supplement restore damaged nerves?

No human trial shows that. Studies measured symptom scores, not nerve repair, and the evidence is of low certainty (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019).

When should numb feet be checked by a doctor?

Soon. Numbness can have causes a capsule will not touch, and sores on numb feet can go unnoticed (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
