PEA for Sciatica: What the Research Actually Shows
PEA for sciatica has one main trial behind it: 636 people with nerve-root pain took 300 mg, 600 mg or placebo for 3 weeks. The 600 mg group did best in a later analysis. That trial was small in reach and published in a Spanish journal. SciatiEase holds 500 mg of PEA per 4-capsule serving.

The basics01
What is PEA and why is it used for sciatica?
PEA is palmitoylethanolamide, a fatty compound the body makes and supplement makers sell for nerve-related pain.
Sciatica is a symptom, often from a disc pressing on a nerve root, and most cases improve on their own (MedlinePlus, Sciatica) (Koes et al., BMJ 2007). That is why placebo groups matter when you read any result.
The panel prints 500 mg of PEA per 4-capsule serving, inside the AlphaPalm Blend. See the PEA ingredient page.
The evidence02
Does PEA work for sciatica?
It may help, but the sciatica evidence rests mostly on one trial.
That trial enrolled 636 people with nerve root pain. They took 300 mg, 600 mg or placebo for 3 weeks. A post hoc look found a number needed to treat of 6.5 at 300 mg and 1.5 at 600 mg (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015). Post hoc means the split came after the data, so treat it as a hint.
| Source | Who | Dose |
|---|---|---|
| Sciatica trial (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015) | 636 with nerve root pain | 300 or 600 mg a day |
| Meta-analysis (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023) | 774 with chronic pain | 300 to 1,200 mg a day |
| Safety tests (Nestmann, Food Sci Nutr 2017) | Rats and cells | Not human trials |
Dose03
Is 500 mg of PEA enough for sciatica?
It sits between the two trial doses, nearer 600 mg than 300 mg.
The better arm used 600 mg (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015). At 2 capsules a day you get 250 mg, below both arms. Nobody has tested SciatiEase itself. More in the PEA dosage post.
- Trial doses: 300 and 600 mg a day.
- Panel dose: 500 mg per 4 capsules.

Is PEA safe alongside sciatica care?
Trials report few problems, but long-term human data are thin.
No major side effects were blamed on PEA in the meta-analysis (Lang-Illievich et al., Nutrients 2023). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and never stop it because of a supplement. See PEA vs gabapentin.
FAQ05
PEA and sciatica: quick questions
How long does PEA take to help sciatic pain?
The main trial ran 3 weeks, the only window with data (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015). Track pain and walking at day 1 and day 21.
Is the PEA sciatica trial reliable?
It is a lead, not proof. Its 6.5 and 1.5 figures were post hoc, in a Spanish journal (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015).
Can PEA fix the cause of sciatica?
No. Trials measured pain scores, not discs or nerve damage (MedlinePlus, Sciatica). See a clinician past 4 weeks.
Does 600 mg of PEA beat 300 mg?
In that trial, yes, post hoc: 1.5 versus 6.5 to reach 50% relief (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015).
Is PEA a painkiller?
No. It is a supplement, and FDA does not approve supplements (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).
